To become engrossed in thoughts means that depending on the kind of thought that arises, a corresponding internal state of being (dhyaan) arises.

However, when the Self does not become engrossed in that and when every circumstance of the pudgal (non-Self complex of input and output) is Known as an effect of the non-Self (parparinaam), that is considered Conduct as the Self (samyak Charitra)!

When effect of karma unfolds, if one finds it ‘tasteful’, meaning that he becomes engrossed (tanmayakaar) in it, then he will have to suffer on account of that.
