Wherever there is ego, meditation (dhyan) does not exist. The inherent nature of the ego is such that dhyan does not exist when the ego is present. Therefore, when dhyan arises it is a resultant state, it is not an activity. Dhyan is the effect that arises from whatever activity the ego does.

If one has not attained Atmagnan (Knowledge of the Self), even then he can keep seeing through indriya gnan (knowledge attained through the medium of the sense organs). However, there is a difference between seeing through indriya gnan and Seeing through the Knowledge of the Self. In seeing through indriya gnan, egoism is present!
