Lord Shiva is considered as the god who was staying in Himalayan Mountains . Parvati was his wife and Ganesh and Kartik were his sons. There are lot of stories described in Scriptures which specifies that Lord Shiva was very innocent and that is why he was called as "Bhole Nath". He is also known as "Neelkanth" as he had drunk all the poison offered to him.
In reality the one who has become a source of blessing to others, one whose ego has totally gone is known as Shiva. For him Salvation is awaiting.
The essence behind the word "Neelkanth" is that one who has swallowed all the poisons (abuses and insults) given to him in this world with equanimity and yet offered blessings to others, hence becoming Shiva.
The ultimate transition from Om Namah Shivay to Shivoham Shivoham...
In the ignorant state one considers himself separate from Shiva and says Om Namah Shivay (I bow to Shiva), but after attaining self realization one gets into constant awareness of soul which is separate from the body and then instead of bowing to Shiva he experiences Shivoham, Shivoham... I am Shiva, I am Shiva. I am a soul and not the body. There remains no distinction, Shiva is my true self and when I recognize it, I become Shiva.
So if you remain in this awareness of separation of body and soul, then only are you truly realized to Lord Shiva which implies "Shivoham Shivoham..."
