Everyone is living life, but what is the point of a life that does not have a goal? What is the aim of life? Have you ever thought about this? As a person grows up he begins to set all kinds of goals for himself either by watching others or through the guidance of others. He has goals of acquiring education, wealth, marriage and family. Even to the point of getting his children married and playing with the grandchildren and even getting them married too! But then what after that? After that he turns to religion. Most of us fall into this category and we are even able to achieve these goals for ourselves. But do we ever set a spiritual goal for us? We pray to God, but for what? What do we want to achieve when we do that? Does anyone ever think about that? For the most part the answer is ‘No’.
No matter how pious a person may be, no matter how much austerity he practices and surrenders himself self to the Lord, all his actions are futile without having a goal or an understanding of it. It would be like going back and forth on a Bombay Central railway station because he has not decided where he wants to go. Many trains come and go but he cannot board any of them because he has not decided on a destination and as a result he wanders about aimlessly! Those who have a destination in mind, continue to find the means of reaching that destination. What do people do if the trains are not running because of an accident or a strike? Do they just sit there? Have you ever seen a traveler remain stranded at an airport or a railway station for days? He will somehow find a way to reach home even if the plane, the train or the taxis are not running. Why is that? It is because there is an intense, burning desire of wanting to reach home, at any cost. Has there ever been such a desire for one to acquire the Supreme Lord (parmatma)? If ever one has that kind of desire, then it will surely happen. We wander around life after life because of lack of such a desire. There is so much power in our bhaavna (internal desire) that the Gnani (A liberated soul who has the knowledge of the Supreme Lord) will himself, come to us and give us the knowledge (Gnan -knowledge that liberates).
But to what degree has such an intense desire arisen within us? Have you ever looked into this? Those who want liberation from this worldly bondage, for them there is nobody in this world that can bind them and those who want to remain bound, will not find anyone to liberate them! Everything depends on your eagerness for liberation.
We had a satsang in a small village. In a large assembly there was a great discussion on the soul and liberation and many questions and answers were flowing back and forth. Many people were listening intently to this discussion but did not understand any of it. A confused look showed up on their faces. After listening for a while one elderly gentleman stood up and shouted, “Madam, you have talked a lot about the Soul and going to Moksha(liberation), but do you have a way to go to moksha? Are you able to do something about it for us?” I told the gentleman, “Yes, it is possible, but first tell me how many here want to go to moksha?” He replied, “Who would not want to be liberated? We all want to be liberated, is there a way to do so?” So, I asked him, “Does everyone here want to go to moksha? Make a list of all who want moksha. The plane to moksha is on its way!” He then proceeded to make a list and when he asked the first person he came across, the man replied that he would not be ready to go until his grandchild was married. The next man said he would not be ready until he sold his farm. The man asked everyone there and no one was ready. He finally realized and admitted to me that I was right and that no one was ready for moksha. I asked him how many times a day did he think about moksha. “Maybe once in fifteen days,” was the reply.
So the one who desires moksha thinks about it only once in fifteen days?! He should be thinking about it day and night and everything else should be irrelevant. People cannot get rid of their attachment to worldly things, even in their old age. Even when their children tell them to retire from their business and start doing something for their liberation and their soul, they still do not refrain from interfering. A daughter-in-law would tell her mother-in-law everyday to go to the temple and perform her religious activities and that she need not worry about running the household. She assures the mother-in-law that she will take care of everything but the mother-in-law still continues to worry. She complains about her daughter-in-law and her inability to cope with the children or run the household more efficiently. She wastes her life away in this way until she dies. She achieves nothing in her life while trying to meet her obligations and the remaining life she spends in conflicts. Moreover, what about the countless past lives she spent doing just this? So if you can live life with the correct understanding, then your life will become heavenly and even your lives to come will improve. For those whose life has improved, they can be assured that their future lives have improved also.
